Research component of the BUILDERS Academy
Consistent with the mission of the NSF, one of the goals of the Tuskegee BUILDERS Academy is to investigate and evaluate the success of the Academy's activities. All student and teacher participants will be invited to participate in this research endeavor. The research will involve filling some surveys and questionnaires related to interest in STEM and opinion on the interventions, as well as participating in small focus groups in which issues related to interest in STEM will be discussed.
Participation in the research component of the Academy is not required to participate in the Academy. Individuals accepted to the Academy will receive more information and will be asked to provide their consent to use their experience in the Academy as part of our research project.
Why do we conduct research on a summer camp?
The ultimate goal of the Tuskegee BUILDERS Academy is to develop and assess interventions that can be used to strengthen and develop the STEM curriculum of your school districts (and eventually, other school districts). Data collection is essential to determine that what we are doing is not only fun, but also effective for this goal.
Who oversees the research?
The research will be overseen by Dr. Martha Escobar (Oakland University, MI). All surveys, questionnaires, and interview questions have been extensively reviewed by the Tuskegee University Institutional Review Board (IRB) for protection of Human Subjects, and approved by the Oakland University IRB.
